1985Tolkien Calendar - Ballantine
1985. Ballantine. The 1985 J. R. R. Tolkien Calendar. ISBN: 0-345-31747-5. 11.5 x 12in. Middle-earth dates. Artwork by Inger Edelfeldt. This calendar contains some rather haunting images. In particular, the portrait of Gollum depicts his long years of torment and desperation. The Death of Glaurung and The Oliphaunt are also images that I have stored away somewhere and bring out when I read the corresponding stories. However, Edelfeldt is best when she depicts single characters as portraits. She has difficulty presenting interacting characters. Everyone looks away from each other. This imparts a stilted view of the scene. The Death of Boromir is one image that appears particularly influenced by this difficulty. There are also a variety of innacurate details in the scenes. For example, Legolas does no appear fair and elf-like. The cloaks of Aragorn and the others have the wrong clasps. I enjoyed Edelfeldt's depiction of Hobbit children.
