1981 Tolkien Calendar - Ballantine
1981. Ballantine. The 1981 J. R. R. Tolkien Calendar: The Great Illustrators Edition. ISBN: 0-345-28890-4. 13 x 12.25in. Contains Middle-earth dates. This calendar contains artwork by Darrell Sweet, Douglas Beekman, Michael Herring, Rowena Morrill and Judy King Rieniets. This calendar is similar in layout to the 1980 Great Illustrators Edition. Overall, the quality of these "great" illustrators is much higher than the 1980 collection. In particular, Daryl Sweet has produced consistently good work; his "Fleet of Harad" is a great illustration. The only detraction is that he draws Hobbits a bit too thin and haggard. They also appear "hunched over" when they should appear to standing upright. Rowena Morrill has been strongly influenced by the Frank Frazetta school of illustration: even the rocks and trees have muscles! I don't think I imagined Galadriel and Luthien as such robust, sexy babes. The Last Steward of Gondor also depicts Aragorn as a young hunk. The years have fallen very lightly if you can look that good after all he has been through. Certainly a journey through the Paths of the Dead will leave some rough spots. Barrow-Wight by Michael Herring is a great illustration. There was no Allen & Unwin calendar published for 1981.
