1974 Tolkien Calendar - Allen & Unwin
1974. Allen & Unwin. 12.375 x 13in. Contains artwork by Pauline Baynes and J.R.R. Tolkien. This calendar is one of the best produced of the series. The cover portrait photograph by Billet Potter is one of the best done of Tolkien. All the artwork is Tolkien's except for the well-known map of Middle-Earth by Pauline Baynes. This is probably the best map currently available. The other illustrations include the best of Tolkien's work: "Conversation with Smaug, "Rivendell" etc. The calendar back cover also contains the emblems of the houses of elves and men, such as Luthien Tinuviel, Feanor and Earendil. Since the Silmarillion was not yet published, some of these must have been unusual to see at the time. These illustrations clearly represent the influence of William Morris and Arts & Crafts decorative arts. On a critical note, this calendar was not printed with sufficient color saturation. Virtually every other printed version of these illlustrations, such as book illustrations and posters have much more vivid color than appears in this calendar.
