The Lord of the Rings Millenium Edition
This is an interesting edition of the Lord of the Rings. It was printed in seven volumes, the six books originally designed by Tolkien and a seventh volume of the Appendices. The UK edition also includes a great CD of Tolkien reading from the book. THE US EDITION DOES NOT HAVE THE CD AND COSTS MORE. This CD is a gem and should be sold as a separate item. I must say that the books themselves were a generally good idea but suffer in the execution: they are just too small. They appear to be hardcover books that are the size of paperbacks. The bindings remind me of the library bindings you can find for paperbacks. They should have been produced at the size of the conventional hardcover books with cloth covers instead of the embossed paper covers they now have. As anyone with an old copy of Smith of Wootten Major knows, embossed covers crack and chip along the spine. The reason to buy this edition from the UK is to get the CD of Tolkien reading. These readings have appeared in LP records and audiotapes before but never at the quality level of this CD. The recordings were originally made when Tolkien visited a friend and he was recorded on an early tape recorder. The recording was remastered for this CD and it sounds much better than anything made before it.
