The Hobbit - Hardcover Trade Edition

This is the preferred reading copy of this book. You must get a hardcover edition since the paperbacks really do not stand up to repeated readings. If you count all the times you will read the story, including readings aloud to your spouse and children, any reasonable Tolkien fan expects to thumb through the book at least 12 times. A paperback will get you only 2 or 3 readings before the pages begin dropping like postcard inserts in Time magazine. You need solid hardcover copies of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. I recommend this one over the 60th Anniversary edition because of its size. It is perfect for a child to hold and read as well as an adult. The collectorÕs editioions and illustrated editions are either too fancy for everyday use, or they are too large and heavy.
