1994 Tolkien Calendar - Ballantine
Ballantine. The 1994 J. R. R. Tolkien Calendar. ISBN: 0-345-38383-4. Artwork by Michael Kaluta. Concurrent with the growth of fantasy literature, there has emerged a large number of illustrators who only depict fantasy subjects. These artists strongly identify with the fantasy genre and develop styles of illustration that fit the romantic and fantastic nature of the literature content. Such artists include Darrell Sweet, the Hildebrandt Brothers and Michael Kaluta. They tend to produce figures that have affected postures and flowing drapery, the sum effect is a type of fantasy "vogue". In the images produced by Michael Kaluta for this calendar, there is a strange stylized similarity in the depiction of all the faces. Many faces do not even have pupils in the eyes. Everyone has the same hair, eyes and general facial features, especially the hobbits. There are also odd proportions for some of the characters. For example, in Meriadoc the Magnificent and the Children of Samwise Handfast (note the error in the title), Merry is presented as a kind of hairy giant in a house that is so small one wonders how he came through the door. However, these problems may all be excused because of the presence of three great images: Legolas Draws the Bow of Galadriel, Theoden Espies the Serpent Banner and Eowyn Before the Doors of Meduseld (What a babe!). These images show this style at its best.
