Alan Lee's watercolors are much more vivid in this calendar than those presented in the calendar of 1987. This medium contributes to a eerie mood in the paintings. The characters in these paintings have a distant, vacant expression, and appear to be looking past each other. I don't feel very engaged in the images and it is very hard to depict actions with watercolor. Alan Lee is a master of light and texture using this medium. Probably the best images are Entrance to Moria and Tol Brandir.
