The Map of Tolkien Beleriand - John Howe and Brian Sibley
This is third in a series of maps done by John Howe and Brian Sibley. The maps are rather weak as Middle-earth maps go. There is little detail and they are more a schematic rather than true maps. The strength of the maps is not the map section but the illustrations by John Howe that surround the map. I think these illustrations are best for The Hobbit map and worst for this map of Beleriand. These have little charm and interest in them. Some of the images have essentially appeared in other places, such as calendars. I like the cover graphic of the Balrogs and fire dragons waiting to pounce on Gondolin. Unfortunately, they are obscured by the credits and text on the back cover. Of course, in retrospect, these maps should have been simply issued as posters: that is what they are and this format leaves them very creased by the folds used to make them fit into a little booklet. Unless you dry-mount them, you have no hope of getting out the creases.
