Major Tolkien Publications

Beyond Bree .
A newsletter of the Tolkien Special Interest Group of Mensa. Beyond Bree contains a great amount of information for collectors, including reviews and announcements of new items. It is very strong on the sources of items outside the US. Edited by Nancy Martsch. Write her for a subscription and back issues. She also published a List of Tolkienalia in 1992 and Basic Quenya. These can be obtained for very reasonable prices. You do not need to be a member of Mensa to receive Beyond Bree. The newsletter is $10 per year (12 issues); $13, overseas. Make checks payable to Nancy Martsch. The address: Nancy Martsch, P.O. Box 55372, Sherman Oaks CA 91413.

Amon Hen. This is the Bulletin of the Tolkien Society. Each issue usually has announcements and references to collectible items. You must join the society to get Amon Hen. Check this link: The Tolkien Society

List of Tolkienalia. This is a listing of Tolkien items based upon submissions to Beyond Bree, a newsletter edited by Nancy Martsch. Published in 1992. There will probably be a series of updates as the years go by. It contains a seemingly exhaustive list of all the non-book Tolkien collectibles created up to the year of publication in 1992. Great detail on calendars, figures, posters etc. This listing is a must-have for the collector.

Vinyar Tengwar . This is the newsletter of the Tolkien Linguistic Fellowship. Since this is an academic journal, there is very little information related to collecting. However, it does include conference announcements, new publications and the like. Contact Carl F. Hostetter for subscription information. Aelfwine@erols.com. He also has a web site devoted to Tolkien's languages: Tolkien Linguistics.

Arda. Arda is an annual for the furtherance and propagation of all discoveries and insights that render clearer the picture of the ancient world that J.R.R. Tolkien subcreated. Arda is bilingual (Swedish and English). Arda is published by the Arda Society with support from the Forodrim, the Stockholm Tolkien Society. Arda Web Page with order form.

Parma Eldalamberon. A journal devoted to fantasy literature, especially the languages of JRR Tolkien. Edited by Christopher Gilson. Issues are published as information becomes available. The articles are first-rate. The artwork is awesome. Patrick Wynne must illustrate a Tolkien calendar. His illustrations should also be done in his unique pen-and-ink style. The most important issue to get is the Parma 11: The Gnomish Grammar and Lexicon. Other back issues are available.

THE SWORD OF EOWYN

A very high quality, beautiful sword. This would make a great decorative gift for the shield maiden in your life, or someone who just loves equestrian design.

LORD OF THE RINGS JEWELRY

Now that the movies have largely run their merchandising course, this may be the best time to purchase high quality jewelry at discounted prices. Use these as gifts for years to come.

LORD OF THE RINGS GAMES!

It appears that any game that could possibly have a Lord of the Rings theme has been produced. These include Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Backgammon and Dominoes.

LORD OF THE RINGS FIGURES

Figures from the movies include a large action figure series. There are separate figure sets and color schemes for each movie. The highest quality figures were made by Sideshow WETA. Although these are expensive, they sell out quickly and will likely keep their values.
